High Lane Fish Bar is a cherished local gem nestled on Buxton Road in High Lane, Stockport, perfectly embodying the heart and soul of a traditional British fish and chips takeaway. Specializing in classic comfort fare, this bustling chippy is renowned for its mouthwatering, freshly prepared dishes that keep customers coming back again and again.
Step up to the counter and indulge in their signature Surf selection, featuring a juicy, golden battered cod fillet that's made to order — flaky, tender, and perfectly crispy with every bite, priced at just £5.50. Complement your fish with their hand-cut, double-fried chips, available in generous portions that range from a small £2.20 to a large £3.90, ensuring no one leaves hungry. For those seeking something with a bit of extra flair, the legendary curry sauce served over chips is a local favorite, lauded by customers for its rich, slightly spicy kick that perfectly elevates the dish without overpowering it.
Beyond fish and chips, High Lane Fish Bar offers an appealing Turf menu with hearty options like a jumbo sausage (£1.70), battered beef burger (£2.90), and crispy chicken nuggets (£2.30), all cooked fresh on-site. Don’t miss out on their beloved chip barm (£2.60) or the delicate scallop, a battered potato slice that delivers a crunchy, flavorful twist for under a pound.
The takeaway’s atmosphere may not boast fancy decor, but what it lacks in aesthetic frills it more than makes up for in vibrancy and authenticity, with friendly staff who manage the busy service with genuine warmth and efficiency. As Paula Gilmartin notes, “The chippy is always busy, the staff friendly and the portion sizes of the chips are massive... all the food is cooked fresh, and it shows.” This sentiment is echoed across the board from Tony Chiu’s praise of the fish and chips paired with mushy peas and that legendary curry sauce to Rod Dalton’s heartfelt appreciation of a meal that brightened a hospital visit after years without such satisfaction.
What truly sets High Lane Fish Bar apart is the deep connection it fosters with its customers — a place where the simple pleasure of fish and chips transcends the everyday. Martin sums it up perfectly, calling it “one of the best fish and chips ever” and proudly naming it his regular chippy. And for those who enjoy a comforting dessert twist, try the pudding with gravy, a surprisingly gorgeous offering favored by locals who crave a touch of homely indulgence.
Do keep in mind that this beloved spot operates on a cash-only basis, ensuring a straightforward transaction that complements its no-nonsense, quality-first approach. Whether you’re craving a quick lunch or a satisfying takeaway to enjoy at home, High Lane Fish Bar delivers the kind of classic British taste that warms your soul and fills your belly with every delectable bite.

We always buy our chips from the chippy to go with our meal once a week. The sausage, chips and gravy are lovely - perfect when the weather turns cold. The chippy is always busy, the staff friendly and the portion sizes of the chips are massive. With being busy, all the food is cooked fresh, and it shows. Its definitely value for money.

Fish and chips, with mushy peas and the 'legendary curry sauce' has got to be one of the best you will ever taste!

I was amazed, this chip shop looks nothing special and I picked up some fish and chips to take into the hospital. It's was the best I've tasted for years and really cheered up the person I was visiting. It's the first time I can remember eating all the chips from a chip shop for about 20 years, I enjoyed the last clip as much as the first! It's my new favourite

Lovely chippy. The pudding with gravy is gorgeous. The legendary curry sauce is my favourite, it is a little spicy but very delicious. Cash only.
